Rooting Out Shame
A Son’s Account of Child Sexual Abuse and Recovery
by Frank Root III
A dutiful son does whatever he can to earn his parent's approval and falls under their control and is subjected to child sexual abuse lasting nearly a decade. Repressing his memories for over 30 years, he faces his struggles as they emerge. Dealing with family, work, and a broken legal system, he overcomes and adapts to heal and recover.
This book is non-fiction and very graphic. Readers should be aware of many triggering aspects of the content.
Frank Root III has retired after 37 in the fire service, including 16 years as fire chief. Though he is not an expert in psychological traumas, he has vast experience in dealing with all kinds of emergency crises. He called on his expertise to deal with the greatest challenge in his life — the horrors of sexual abuse perpetrated by his parents. He hopes that by sharing his struggles, others may gain insight and strength to tackle the traumas of their own lives.

Rooting Out Shame on The Author’s Show
Advance Praise for
Rooting Out Shame
“As often the case for survivors of sexual trauma, Frank Root’s memories lay dormant for decades until one day they suddenly surfaced, painfully and radically changing the trajectory of his life and his wife’s. In Rooting Out Shame, Frank vulnerably and graphically shares some of the horrific traumas he and his siblings endured at the hands of their perversely abusive parents, and their courageous battle for some semblance of justice. From disruptive flashbacks and fragmented trauma memories, Frank has formed a narrative—a vital part of the healing journey—that is both cohesive and engaging, and now he’s helping others do the same.”

“Vivid, shocking, and blatant, this courageous author describes in detail the thoughts, feelings, and horror from being a victim of parental incest as a young child. After years of repression, he begins his journey of recollection, shame, devastation, and finally healing. Through years of therapy, he describes how he, together with his wife, embraced the emotional and psychological journey of healing to find renewed love, justice, and peace. A must-read for the mental health community who work with families of incest and childhood sexual abuse.”
—Carol L. Petro, MSW, LSW

“The author’s professionalism and compassionate approach to his friends and family are an inspiration. An incest survivor myself, I’m convinced the steadfast courage he exudes in this book can be a beacon of hope for survivors everywhere. His message is clear and unwavering. The grit and determination revealed in these pages exemplifies the true triumph of the human spirit.”

“Rooting Out Shame is a courageous personal account of the amazing human capacity to transform into an instrument of healing, love, and support despite enduring truly horrific violations of body and mind. This story is a powerful reminder that childhood sexual abuse insidiously manifests in various forms that metastasize in darkness and silence. The author’s resilient voice blazes a powerfully enlightening and antidotal pathway toward elevating our human consciousness, empathy, and systems of justice.”

“It had to have taken enormous bravery to bring forth such a personal story. Clearly, Chief Frank Root III did it in the hope that it would help the men and women who read it. Rooting Out Shame is a hard story to read, but a very important one.”
